Can You Do Neuropsych Testing During The Pandemic?

The short answer is yes!

The longer answer is that, like many of the changes we’ve made in our lives since the pandemic started, neuropsychological testing also has to adapt.

Chicagoland Neuropsychology recognizes the need for neuropsychological and psychological testing does not stop because we must start social distancing. We also understand the concerns patients and their families have about going to an office for an evaluation. For this reason, we have taken steps to provide this essential service as safely as possible and still provide patients with valuable guidance when they need it.

Neuropsychological Testing During COVID-19

Before COVID-19, the clinical interview and neuropsychological testing were completed in one day, in person. This was easy to do, and most patients preferred getting everything done in one day. While it was convenient, there have always been parts of the evaluation could be done from home and over videoconference.

During the time of COVID-19, patients shouldn’t have to choose between, a loved one’s need to be evaluated, and the safety of their family. To protect patient safety and maintain the quality of his evaluations, Dr. Brietzke and his team now begin the clinical interview via videoconference. This interview usually lasts about 1.5-2 hours and can include other loved ones who are not in the same house. We then send web links to complete some of the tests at home to get the process started for the parts of the evaluation which do not need to be administered in person.

Next, from the clinical interview information and early testing results, Dr. Brietzke can draw some initial conclusions. He will then schedule a second videoconference a couple of days later to give patients preliminary results and treatment recommendations.

Because some essential tests can only be administered in person, these can be completed when it becomes safer to meet in the office. When we meet to finish the assessment, you will be scheduled when no one else is in the waiting room. Everyone will be expected to wear facemasks, and Chicagoland Neuropsychology will be following all Centers for Disease Control guidelines.

Getting Your Neuropsychological Testing Results

Once all testing is complete, Dr. Brietzke will schedule a 2-hour block of time to meet with you to explain what the report means, and what treatment options would be the best fit.  This feedback meeting could be scheduled in person or via video conference, as you choose.

During this time of uncertainty, we continue to look for the kind of certainty that neuropsychological testing provides. Because there are more uncertainties than cannot be answered in this article please call us at 708-320-1441 with your questions or fill out the form on this page to request a consultation.
