Therapeutic Tutoring in Oak Park, Chicago
We all remember that one teacher who truly understood us. The one you knew you could trust and who motivated you to succeed at things that seemed impossible. Creating this kind of change is why teachers became educators in the first place. The problem is that it’s so difficult for your child’s regular teacher to give that life-changing attention and warmth to an entire class. That’s why we developed this program. Amazing things happen when teachers are free to do what they do best. We’re here to help your child realize their full potential and transform their relationship with learning.
What is Therapeutic Tutoring?
Therapeutic tutoring is more than homework help, and all of our tutors are real teachers. We offer a comprehensive approach that integrates academic instruction with emotional and behavioral coaching as well as parent support. This holistic approach ensures that your child receives the support they need in all areas of their learning journey.
Many students come to us after traditional tutoring hasn’t worked. They may have tried large learning centers that use scripted lessons or college students as tutors, but the results didn’t last. Why? Because the real barrier wasn’t just content—it was confidence, executive functioning, or anxiety.
What Therapeutic Tutoring Isn’t
Therapeutic Tutoring isn’t talk therapy and it definitely isn’t everyday “homework help.” What we offer helps kids rediscover what it feels like to enjoy school again.
Key differences that set our program apart:
- Sessions are led by licensed teachers with professional classroom experience.
- Instruction is personalized, not scripted.
- We address the emotional factors—anxiety, school avoidance, low self-esteem—that affect learning.
Our goal is not just higher grades but a lasting love of learning that extends from now, to college and beyond.
In large tutoring centers, the focus is often short-term—helping a child pass an upcoming test or finish a worksheet. While this might provide temporary relief, it rarely changes the child’s relationship with learning. In contrast, therapeutic tutoring builds habits, strategies, and confidence that continue to benefit students for years. We aim for the moment when a child realizes that learning can be enjoyable, manageable, and rewarding. That realization changes everything: they stop dreading school, start taking risks, and begin to see themselves as capable learners.

Academic Tutoring Tailored to Your Child
Every child learns differently. Some find ease in certain subjects but feel discouraged in others. Some are capable but need help staying engaged, while others work hard yet struggle to see results. That’s why each student in our program receives a personalized learning plan created by a licensed teacher who adapts instruction to their unique needs.
Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model, sessions are designed to meet the child where they are and help them move forward at their own pace. Rather than focusing on “deficits,” we highlight learning opportunities and emerging strengths that lead to steady, meaningful growth.
Our teachers use conversations with parents, student input, and school performance data (like MAP scores, report cards, or feedback from teachers) to shape instruction. Instead of drilling content that feels disconnected, we use engaging, evidence-based methods that help students truly understand and apply what they are learning.
Most importantly, our tutoring helps children rediscover their confidence, curiosity, and joy in learning. Most importantly, our academic tutoring is built on the belief that grades improve naturally when children rediscover curiosity and joy in learning.
Executive Functioning Coaching
One of the most common reasons students struggle is not because they lack ability but because they have not yet developed strong executive functioning skills. These are the skills that allow us to manage our time, plan ahead, organize materials, and follow through with long-term projects.
In school settings, teachers know how important executive functioning is, but with dozens of students in a classroom, they often cannot give the one-on-one coaching students need. Our executive functioning coaching program gives licensed teachers the opportunity to finally use the strategies they know work but cannot apply in large groups.
We help students learn to:
- Organize their materials and keep track of assignments.
- Plan long-term projects step by step, so they don’t feel overwhelming.
- Break down large tasks into smaller, achievable actions.
- Use strategies to maintain focus even when a task feels boring or difficult.
- Develop resilience when they make mistakes, so they can bounce back instead of shutting down.
Picture a student who has a research paper due in three weeks. Without executive functioning skills, they might ignore the assignment until the night before, leading to stress, conflict at home, and a poor grade. With coaching, that same student learns to create a timeline: choosing a topic in week one, gathering sources in week two, writing a draft in week three, and revising before the due date. This structured approach reduces stress, builds confidence, and models the way successful learners tackle challenges. These are the same skills they will need in college, in their careers, and in managing life responsibilities.
Emotional Support and Confidence-Building
Behind every academic struggle lies an emotional story. Sometimes it’s anxiety about failure. Sometimes it’s years of feeling “not smart enough.” Sometimes it’s frustration that leads to avoidance. If these feelings go unaddressed, no amount of worksheets will solve the problem. Therapeutic Tutoring isn’t about talk therapy. And it isn’t only about academic help. When the main concern is school performance, Therapeutic Tutoring is better than either of those alone.
Our therapeutic tutoring makes emotional support central to the process. Teachers observe the subtle signs of stress, discouragement, or avoidance and address them in real time. They help students reframe challenges, celebrate small wins, and learn to persist when tasks feel difficult.
Confidence is the cornerstone of long-term success. When students begin to believe in their ability to learn, everything changes. They take risks, ask questions, and engage more deeply in school. This newfound resilience extends beyond academics into friendships, extracurricular activities, and personal growth.
For one student, success might mean completing homework consistently without tears. For another, it might mean raising their hand in class for the first time. For yet another, it might mean applying to colleges they never thought they could reach. Each of these outcomes reflects growth in confidence and resilience. And each one starts with a supportive one-on-one relationship with a teacher who believes in them.
Parent Participation and Coaching
The most powerful changes happen when teachers and parents work as a team. That’s why we build in monthly consultations to review goals, celebrate progress, and refine strategies. These sessions provide a level of collaboration that isn’t possible in most school settings, where teachers simply don’t have the time.
Parents often know something isn’t working but feel powerless to help. Homework becomes a battleground. Motivation feels impossible to spark. Confidence slips away, and frustration grows on all sides. Through monthly consultations with their child’s teacher, they discover that nightly conflicts about homework slowly dissipate. They discover that when the pressure shifts from “You have to do this” to “Let’s figure this out together,” everything changes.
SAT Prep with Licensed Teachers
The SAT is a milestone that can create enormous pressure. Many students experience test anxiety, lose focus, or struggle with pacing under timed conditions. Traditional test prep often focuses only on drilling practice questions, but our program takes a broader, more supportive approach.
Every student receives one-on-one coaching from a licensed teacher who understands both the content of the SAT and the emotional challenges that come with it. Sessions include targeted practice in reading comprehension, grammar, and math, as well as strategies for managing time and reducing stress. Students complete practice tests and receive personalized feedback that helps them refine their approach.
Our SAT prep goes beyond rote learning. We coach students on how to stay calm during high-pressure situations, how to manage their energy across long testing sessions, and how to reframe mistakes as learning opportunities. By the time test day arrives, students feel not just prepared but empowered.
The resilience students build while preparing for the SAT translates to future challenges—college exams, job interviews, presentations, and beyond. We emphasize that the SAT is one test, but the strategies they learn—time management, persistence, and confidence—are skills they will use for the rest of their lives.
Tutoring Packages
We follow a clear structure that allows for personalization and growth. To start off, you’ll schedule a free, initial virtual visit with one of our teachers. During that session, we’ll listen to your concerns, learn about your child’s strengths and challenges, and begin shaping goals. Most importantly, this gives you, the parent, a chance to decide if your child will connect with this teacher. If you choose to continue, this is how our program is structured:
- First Tutoring Sessions – Teachers begin working one-on-one, using both school materials and evidence-based strategies.
- Developing the Educational Plan – Together with parents, we finalize a plan that can adapt over time.
- Monthly Parent/Teacher Progress Meeting
- Continued Sessions and Reflection – Progress is reviewed regularly, with adjustments made as needed.
This process ensures both consistency and flexibility, creating a supportive environment where students can grow steadily and confidently. Individual tutoring sessions are available for new clients interested in seeing if the program is the right match for their child’s needs.
Tutoring costs vary depending on the student’s needs, age, and the length of each session. Rates for individual sessions start at $55 and are based on the length of the tutoring session. A reduced rate is provided to students enrolled in monthly packages.
